(....) I Cantodiscanto in origine furono formati da Guido Sodo a Napoli negli anni '80. Sodo si trasferì a Bologna nel '91 e i progetti successivi sviluppati con musicisti locali. Sodo suona vari tipi di chitarre, oud, arpa celtica e voce e il resto della formazione attuale sono Paolo Caruso (percussioni), Ivan Valentini (sassofoni), Roberto Bartoli (contrabbasso, voce), Frida Forlani (voce, caxixi) e ospite il cantante palestinese Faisal Taher.
La musica dei Cantodiscanto racchiude la musica popolare del Mediterraneo filtrata attraverso la ricca diversità di esperienza degli abili musicisti della band, che include folk italiano, jazz, musica classica e ritmi africani e latini. Gli album precedenti includevano composizioni di Sodo, ma le canzoni sull'ultima uscita sono tutte canzoni che il gruppo ha scoperto in Paesi che ha visitato. Ci sono canzoni da Svezia, Turchia, Capo Verde, Grecia, Spagna e naturalmente alcune dal repertorio italiano e questa varia collezione è interpretata con inventiva eleganza. Il materiale è tutto di livello molto alto, ma ho individuato alcune canzoni che dimostrano la diversità del materiale e l'abilità dell'esecuzione. Trilo è una canzone svedese che inizia con straordinarie armonie non accompagnate che lasciano il posto a un dinamico ritmo di percussioni, a una delicata arpa celtica e a un espressivo sax soprano; Bayaty è di origine turca e ha scale orientali e sinuose melodie: African Jig è un'interpretazione della melodia tradizionale Morrison's Jig combinata con ritmi latini e africani ; e Sodade è una canzone identificata con l'ultima Cesaria Evora, ma con versi aggiunti in napoletano.
Tutto il mondo è paese si traduce come The Whole World Is A Village, che somma piuttosto chiaramente la filosofia della band e del loro splendido album . E' anche una buona descrizione dell'etica di fRoots.

Cantodiscanto were originally formed by Guido Sodo in Naples in the 1980s. Sodo moved to Bologna in 1991 and subsequent projects were made with local musicians. Sodo plays various forms of guitar, oud, Celtic harp and vocals and the resto f the current line-up is Paolo Caruso (percussion), Ivan Valentini (saxophones), Roberto Bartoli (double bass, vocals), Frida Forlani (vocals, caxixi) and a Palestinian guest vocalist Faisal Taher.
Cantodiscanto's music encompasses folk music from the Mediterranean filteres through the rich diversity of experience of the skilled musicians of the band, which includes Italian folk, jazz, classical music and African and Latin rhythms. Previous albums have included composition from Sodo, but the songs on the latest release are all songs that the band has discovered in countries they have visited. There are songs from Sweden, Turkey, Cape Verde, Greece, Spain and of course some italian repertoire and this varied collection is interpreted with inventive panache.
The material is all of a very high standard, but I have picked out a few songs that demonstrate the diversity of the material and the adroitness of execution. Trilo is a Swedish song that begins with striking unaccompanied harmonies that give way to a dynamic drum rhythm, delicate Celtic harp and expressive soprano saxophone; Bayaty is of Turkish origin and has eastern scales and serpentine melodies; African Jig is an interpretation of the traditional tune Morrison's Jig combined with Latin and African rhythms; and Sodade is identified with the late Cesaria Evora, but with an added verse in Neapolitan. Tutto il mondo è paese translates as The Whole World Is A Village, wich rather neatly sums up the philosophy of the band and their superb album. It is also a good description of the ethos of fRoots.
